Reading News Item texts is a good activity to improve students’ language skills. However, students with low achievement still faced difficulty in reading news item texts. This was because there were many factors that demotivated the students during the reading news item activity. This study was aimed to reveal the demotivating factors faced by students with low achievement. The population of the research was 41 students in class C of the students in 2015 intake. Based on the necessity of the research, by using purposive sampling, there were 2 students having lowest achievement and 4 students with the score next to the lowest achievement as the subject of the research. Furthermore, the data were gained by using diary and interview. The result showed that there were 15 demotivating factors in reading news item texts. They consisted of 8 internal and 7 external demotivating factors. The highest frequency of internal demotivating factors was students’ failure in guessing meaning which came out 15 times amounting to 13%, while the external demotivating factor was the students’ problem about unfamiliar vocabulary which were noted 12 times amounting to 10.4%.
