Abstract

Indonesian society still maintains the tradition by utilizing surrounding
plants for treatment or health care. Generally, they have a knowledge and
processing system of local resources that are inherited and developed
continuously for generations. Obesity is considered as the first signal of the
emergence of many non-infectious diseases that occur in many developed and
developing countries. This research was conducted to explore the information
about the types of medicinal plants as antiobesity and how to use them in the
Baturraden District, Banyumas Regency. This type of research was descriptive
survey by using semi-structured interviews to 30 respondents at the study site in
March-May 2018. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively with the
interpretation of the interview results. The results showed that in Baturraden
Subdistrict, Banyumas Regency, 24 species of plants were documented for
antiobesity. The most widely used plants in Baturraden Subdistrict as antiobesity
were the Zingiberaceae tribe. Such as turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), ginger
(Zingiber officinale Roscoe.), javanese ginger (Curcuma zanthorrhiza Roxb.),
galingale (Kaempferia galanga L.), and three species of plants that had little
literature on their use as antiobesity, namely ciplukan (Physalis angulata L.),
areca nut (Areca catechul L.), mangkokan leaves (Nothopanax scutellarium
Merr.). The process to consume was by boiling and drinking.
