Abstract

The purpose of this study was to obtain a description of the mathematical
representation ability of students in PE (Physical Education) class at SMP N 4
Purbalingga. The type of research used in this study was a descriptive qualitative
research. This study was conducted in 3 main stages in the procedure namely the
preparation stage, the implementation stage, and the data analysis stage. In this
study, students were classified into 3 categories, namely high self-confidence,
moderate self-confidence, and low self-confidence categories in which 3 students
were selected from each category to become research subjects. The data collection
techniques used in this study were tests and interviews. The results of the study
showed that: (a) students with high self-confidence were able to describe
geometric shapes as an explanation of a problem and facilities in solving; convert
other given representations to mathematical equations or models; as well as
arrange steps to solve math problems in words; (b) students with moderate selfconfidence
were able to describe geometric shapes as an explanation of a problem
and facilities in solving and change other representations given to mathematical
equations or models, and (c) students with low self-confidence were only able to
change other representations given to equations or mathematical models.
