This research was aimed to find out; 1) The strategies used by students when
experiencing problems in reading text, 2) The strategies mostly and least used by
students. The method of this research was descriptive research, in which
questionnaire and interview were used to elicit the data. The samples of this study
ware the 2nd semester of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto in academic
year 2018/2019. The research finding revealed that the students used predicting,
scanning, skimming, summarizing, questionning, inference, mind mapping as their
strategy in comprehending text. Those strategies belonged to high category. It
means the students often used those strategies. Scanning got the highest
percentage 76,04%, which means this strategy is mostly used by the student and
summarizing got the lowest percentage 64,59%, which means this strategy is least
used by students. The result of questionnaire was supported by interview result
which most of the students said that scanning strategy help them to know the
important point of the text in a limited time. Then, based on interview result the
student said that they need much time to read and write a summary.
