This study investigates the roles of Civic Education (PPKn) in instilling students' responsibility in SMP Negeri 5 Purwokerto. It employed descriptive qualitative using qualitative approach. The data collection techniques were interview, observation, and documentation study. The subject of this study were civic education teacher, representative from 7 and 8 grade students, counselling guidance coordinator, and assistant principal for students. Data analysis in this study used data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The findings indicate that civic education has positive roles in instilling students' responsibility. Learning used by civic education namely the form of exemplary, educating sanctions, and learning components (material, method, media, learning source, and evaluation) support to instill students' responsibility. It can be seen from students' attitude such as doing task and homework, having responsibility for each deed, carrying out of cleaning the classroom according to the schedule, and doing group assignment together. Meanwhile, there are some obstacles in instilling responsibility, such as the learning process is less varied. The solution that can be done is by using teaching media and method that are more interesting and for the students who do not do individual or group assignment, they will get sanction according to the class agreement.
