Abstract

English Proficiency Test is a test that conducted by English Education
Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto in order to know
students’ ability in listening, structure and reading comprehension. Almost every
round of the test, the percentage of students who were able to pass the test was
below 30%. That means, the students that were able to get high score (above 500)
was always in small number. The aim of this research is to unveil EPT-high
achievers’ learning strategy. Descriptive quantitative and qualitative using survey
were used as the method of this research. To investigate learning strategy form
those successful EPT-high achievers’, 13 respondents were surveyed by using
SILL questionnaire version 7.0 designed by Oxford (1990). All of the respondents
were also interviewed in order to get detailed information about their learning
strategies. Result from SILL questionnaire and interview showed similar result;
all 13 respondents use four learning strategies in high frequency, namely cognitive,
compensation, metacognitive, and social strategy. On the other hand, respondents
also used memory and affective strategy in moderate frequency.
