Abstract

Typhoid fever is a public health problem in developing countries in Asia especially in tropical and subtropical regions including Indonesia. Bitter leaf (Andrographis paniculata Ness) has been known to treat various diseases. It is also believed to be antibacterial because it contains flavonoids, tannins and saponins and also people believe that earthworm powder can treat typhoid fever. This study aims to determine the combined activity of ethanol extract of bitter leaf and earthworm powder on S.typhi bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration of extract obtained is 25 mg / ml which can inhibit the growth of bacteria and earthworm powder can not inhibit the growth of S.typhi bacteria with various concentrations while the combination of the two can inhibit S.typhi bacteria only at a concentration of 125 mg / ml and 500mg / ml, but the antibacterial activity is due to the ethanol extract of the bitter leaf. Data were analyzed by One Way Anova with data requirements that were normally distributed and homogeneous using SPSS with (a = 0.05) and the results of the study showed that the data were not normally distributed and homogeneous. Then the Kruskal-wallis test was carried out and continued with the Mann & Whitney test to see differences between treatments, the results showed an Asymp.sig value of 0.00 which meant that the data differed significantly between ethanol extracts of the single bitter leaf and a combination of earthworm powders. So the bitter leaf ethanol extract is effective in inhibition the growth of S.typhi bacteria, earthworm powder cannot inhibition the growth of S.typhi bacteria and the combination of both can inhibition the growth of S.typhi bacteria at certain concentrations
