Abstract

In the 2018 PISA research, Indonesia ranked low in the category of reading,
science, and mathematics. It ranked 74th out of 79 countries (OECD, 2018). This
shows that the mathematical literacy skills in Indonesia are still very poor.
Therefore, it is interesting to examine mathematical literacy skills viewed from
the Habits of Mind. This reasearch aimed to describe the mathematical literacy
ability of grade 8 students of SMP Negeri 1 Kawunganten viewed from the Habits
of Mind. The method used was descriptive qualitative with a purposive sampling
technique. Based on the Habits of Mind questionnaire, students are grouped into
3 Habits of Mind categories, namely low, medium and high. However, this
research focused only on low and high Habits of Mind. Each took 3 students to
be the respondents. The data collection techniques were tests and interviews. The
data were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model including data
reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results showed that: (1)
Students with low Habits of Mind met the indicators of mathematical literacy
ability, namely being able to identify mathematical concepts that can be used in
problem-solving. (2) Students with high Habits of Mind were able to identify
mathematical concepts that can be used in problem solving, present written
mathematical statements by presenting logical arguments, develop strategies that
would be used to solve problems, and precisely use mathematical language in the
form of arithmetic symbols or algebraic operations.
