Abstract

Coffee was currently experiencing a fairly good increase. It could be seen from the
number of coffee enthusiasts in several regions. The objectives of this study were to
determine (1) the characteristics of coffee farmers in the coffee agribusiness in
Salem Sub-district, Brebes Regency, (2) the characteristics of traders in coffee
agribusiness in Salem Sub-district, Brebes Regency, (3) the socio-economic
relationships that attract for farmers to cooperate with traders in the coffee
agribusiness business in Salem District, Brebes Regency, (4) and the motive for the
socio-economic relationship between coffee farmers and traders in Salem Subdistrict,
Brebes Regency. This study employed the Purposive Sampling technique of
Non-Probability Sampling to select 30 farmers as the respondents. Meanwhile, the
traders were selected using census method. It was involving the entire population
as a sample in which the total was 2 traders. This research was carried out for 3
months, from June 2021 to August 2021 in Salem Sub-district, Brebes Regency. The
socio-economic characteristics of coffee farmers and traders indicated that 1) the
age of coffee farmers was in productive age, 2) the respondents relatively had a low
level of education, 3) the farming period was under 5 years or with a percentage of
16.6%, 4) the average income was 2-5 million with the percentage of 63.3 %, 5) the
number of dependents family members was 3-4 people with the percentage of
14.28%. Furthermore, the motive for the socio-economic relationshipbetween
farmers and traders revealed that the traders needed coffee from the farmers.
Meanwhile, the farmers possibly obtained capital debt from the traders
