Abstract
The research was aimed to investigate and find out students‟ perception on the use of asynchronous and synchronous learning during the covid-19 pandemic situation. This survey-method research used instruments to collect data from the research subjects: questionnaires and interviews. Total sampling was applied with 61 students of 4th semester majoring in English Education at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto as the respondents requested and implemented to fill out the questionnaire. The analyses of the data indicate that “there was not any significant difference in their perception regarding the use of synchronous and asynchronous learning method during the pandemic. This was shown by the percentage of each of the learning methods. The synchronous online learning reached 70.53%, while the asynchronous one got 69.91%. On the other hand, the interview results showed that the students preferred using asynchronous to synchronous learning. This related to students' answers in the interview results on questions number 1 and 2. Most of them prefer asynchronous learning as learning that has gone well during the covid-19 pandemic situation and as learning that is preferred by students. There were three aspects that underlie the reasons why they prefer asynchronous to synchronous, they were signal, accessibility, and time availability. The first one asynchronous is minimally constrained in terms of signal. The second one, asynchronous is easy to use, which means learning through asynchronous can be done anytime and anywhere. The last is the availability of time to understand the material given by the lecturer.
