Abstract

Indonesia's rice production has been increasing in the past five years. However, it is still low with approximately 5.2 tons per hectare compared to Australia in the first position with a productivity of 10 tons per hectare. It is affected by many factors one of which is golden snails. Using vegetable molluscicide can be one of the solutions. The results of previous research show that Bitung fruit (Barringtonia asiatica) extract could raise 78.33% of mortality on the concentration of 20%. Unfortunately, the fruit is hard to find so there should be an alternative that is easier to find such as the papaya plant. This research was conducted to find out the effectiveness of papaya leaf extract as molluscicide toward golden snail using a Completely Randomized Design. The treatment of giving papaya leaf extract included the concentration of 0%; 10%; 15%; and 20%, with 5 repetitions and synthetic molluscicide as a comparison. The observed parameter was the mortality of golden snails. The data were analyzed using F test, and continued with Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) on a trust level of 95%. The results show that papaya leaf extract causes significant mortality and the highest one is on the concentration of 20% papaya leaf extract with 80% mortality. It was relatively high although not as high as the positive control that used synthetic molluscicide with 96% mortality.
