This study aimed to describe the application of cooperation and politeness
principles in students' utterances in learning Indonesian at SMA Negeri 1 Wangon in
2019. This is descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were obtained in
the form of students' utterances in learning Indonesian. The source of this research is
the students in the process of learning Indonesian. Observational method with
advanced techniques of observation nonparticipatory method (SBLC), recording
techniques, and noting techniques was used as the methods and techniques for
providing data. Pragmatic equivalent method and with advanced technique of dividing
key-factors technique (PUP) and equalizing technique (HBS) were used as the
methods and techniques for analyzing data. The results of research analysis were
presented in informal methods. The results of the analysis of this study revealed the
presence of students who adhere to the principle of cooperation including compliance
with the quantity maxim, quality maxim, relevance maxim, implementation maxim,
and violation of the quantity maxim, quality maxim, relevance maxim,
implementation maxim. During the learning process, students do not only listen and
record what is explained by the teacher, but students also tend to be active in class by
responding to the teacher, so that activities with the principle of cooperation emerge.
The application of politeness principles found in students' speeches includes the tact
maxim, generosity maxim, praise maxim, humility maxim, agreement maxim,
sympathy maxim, and violation of wisdom maxim, generosity maxim, and humility
maxim. Compliance and violation of the maxim committed by students aim to express
students' curiosity about unknown information.
