Abstract

This research aimed to describe students' mathematical analogical thinking at SMP
Negeri 8 Purwokerto viewed from their Intelligence Quotient (IQ). Descriptive qualitative
method of Miles and Huberman model was used as the research method including data
reduction, data display, and conclusion. This research subject was the seventh graders of
group C at SMP Negeri 8 Purwokerto in Academic Year of 2017/2018. The students were
classified into three groups based on the category of their Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test that
was conducted by Yayasan Cipta Daya Husada on August 4th, 2017; those categories were
superior, average, and normal. Purposive sampling was used as the technique of sampling to
choose 2 respondents for each category. The methods of data collection use observation, test,
intervew, and documentation. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that: (1)
students with high learning achievement used their intuitive thinking based on their
knowledge and experience so that they could answer the questions correctly; (2) students
with medium learning achievement answered the questions using compelling argument and
refused something that was not relevant with their knowledge, so that it might them choose
answer incorrectly; (3) students with low learning achievement used their intuitive thinking
only based on their conviction so that they failed to give logical reason in answering the
questions.
