Abstract

This study aims to improve the reading ability of understanding news material
through Jigsaw type cooperative learning in class VIII F in Wangon 1 Public Middle
School, this research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a Jigsaw
cooperative model. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII F which
numbered 34 students. This research was conducted in two cycles, namely cycle I and
cycle II. Each cycle has four stages, namely, planning, action, observation, and
reflection. Data collection techniques used were test techniques in the form of oral
tests by conveying the results of group discussions, and non-test techniques using
observation sheets that were conducted to observe the actions of students and teachers
during the process of learning activities took place. In the first cycle and second cycle
the material used as learning media is a problem taken from newspapers or
newspapers and the internet, with the topic of education, such as "the new student
admission system through a zone system, and a lunar eclipse". This research was
carried out in collaboration or in pairs involving class teachers who acted as observers
and researchers as instructors while observing student activities. The results of the
study showed an increase in the number of students completeness in each cycle.
Preliminary data showed that there were 9 students who completed the study with a
percentage of 26.5% with an average score of 61.75. After taking action or treatment,
the number of students who have completed their study increases to 12 students
(35.3%) with an average score of 69.71. And after taking action or treatment in the
second cycle, the number of students who complete the study increases significantly,
which is as many as 18 students (52.9%) with an average value of 72.35. Based on
these values, it can be concluded that the Jigsaw type cooperative learning model
proved to be good and succeeded in improving reading comprehension of class VIII F
students of Wangon 1 State Middle School.
