Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out the students’ strategies and the most dominant strategy used by the students in learning writing. Survey was used as the method of this research. The subject of this research was 72 students of second semester of English Education Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. Questionnaire was used as an instrument in collecting the data. The result showed that the students used all writing strategies and the most dominant strategy among other strategies was compensation strategy which achieved 73.47% which is followed by social strategy with 71.67%, metacognitive strategy with 71.28%, affective strategy with 69.31% , cognitive strategy with 67.55%; and the last dominant strategy was memory strategy which had only 66.85%.
