Abstract

This research was aimed at revealing the students’ strategies of using EMI in EFL classes. This was a case study. The data from the field was analyzed descriptively. There were 2 classes who participated in this research. To investigate the students’ way of using EMI, two instruments were used: observation and interview. Both interview and observation results showed that all participants of the research used two strategies in using EMI. They are group works and question and answer. In group works, students used English to discuss the materials. This strategy helped the students communicate with the group members optimally. In the other strategy, question and answer, the students were good at answering question in English eventhough they did not do the same thing when they asked question. During the use of English in the learning processes, the students still found difficulties in using EMI. This was because they still could not pronounce English words well, and master and interpret the meaning of words. In addition, not all students were able to understand what the teachers explained using EMI. The last, asking questions from the teachers in English was still considered difficult for the students.
