Abstract

This study aimed to describe the process of forming and the misspellings of abbreviations and acronyms in the June 2018 edition of Republika.co.id. This was a descriptive qualitative research. The research data were in the form of abbreviations and acronyms taken from Republika.co.id in June 2018 edition. In collecting the data, observation method was used along with tapping technique as the basic technique and writing technique as the advanced one. Meanwhile to analyze the data, distributional method and direct element division technique were used, and then followed by some advanced techniques such as expansion, interruption, deletion, and substitution technique. Besides, informal method was employed to present the results of the research and formative technique was used in sample presentation. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that the abbreviations on the June 2018 edition of Republika.co.id were formed through nine processes. Eight new abbreviation formation processes were also found. Meanwhile the acronyms were formed through nine processes and there were also 26 new acronym processes. In addition, the results of the research conducted about spelling mistakes of the abbreviations and acronyms indicated that the most dominant language error was the use of capital letters. This was proved by the discovery of 45 capital letters.
