Abstract

This research was aimed to find out which the problematic factors of Second
Language Acquisition using Ellis’s theory (1994) are faced by the students. And
also most and less dominant factors. Descriptive method was adopted in this
research. The research involved seventy three students from ten grade of
Muhammadiyah Islamic Boarding School of Cilongok "Zam Zam", Central Java,
Indonesia in academic year 2018/2019. Data was collected through nineteen
statements of questionnaire and six interview questions. The result showed that
there were four factors faced by the students namely motivation, aptitude,
personality and social. While specifically, there was one less dominant factor
namely anxiety (27.05%) and one most dominant factor namely motivation
(88.82%). Students faced problems in the most affecting sub factors related to (a)
willingness to speak when it is obligation (97.26%), (b) trust from other people
(97.73%), (c) being able to speak English to get better opportunities to get better
job (91.78%), (d) being able to memorize new words from new language
(93.15%), (e) preference of speaking in front of friends (89.04%), and (f) feeling
confident to speak when the partner has the same ability (87.78%).
