Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know about teachers’ attitude toward the use of L1 in EFL classrooms and also the factors influencing it. This research was conducted at two junior high schools in distric Cilongok. This research used qualitative approach. The instruments used were observation and interview. There were two teachers who were being involved in this research. Based on the result of the study, there were three components of attitudes with some aspects appeared by the teachers toward the use of L1 in EFL classrooms. In affective component, the attitudes which appeared are receiving, responding, valuing and characterization. In behavior component, the attitudes which appeared are imitating, using, constancy, coupling and naturalization. In cognitive component, the attitudes which appeared are knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, and evaluation. In addition, the factor influencing the teachers’ attitude toward the use of L1 is only social factor. While for the two other factors are considered as factors which are not really influencing the teachers’ attitude.
