Abstract

The study aims to describe paragraph cohesion on explanation text of the eleventh grade of office administration majored students at the school. It was a descriptive qualitative research. The data of the study were in the form of paragraphs of students' explanation texts showing the use of grammatical and lexical cohesion devices. Data of
the study were obtained from the explanation texts written by the eleventh graders of this school. Document technique was used to provide the data of the study. Data of the study were analyzed by using distributional method and segmenting immediate constituent technique and mark reading technique. The informal method was used to present the results of the data. Results of the study revealed that there were 272 data showing the use of cohesion devices in students' texts covering grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. (1) The use of grammatical cohesion consisted of cohesion reference devices (67 data); substitution (1 data); conjunction cohesion devices (167 data). (2) The use of lexical cohesion consisted of synonym lexical cohesion devices (4
data); antonyms (6 data); hyponyms (3 data); repetition devices (14 data); equivalent devices (10 data). This study also showed that conjunctions in grammatical aspects were more often used by the students than other grammatical cohesions. The lexical cohesion devices mostly used were repetition devices. Results of the study suggest that there should be an implementation in learning, especially on explanation texts, focusing on the terms, main content, references, knowledge and sequence of events showing causality.
