This study aims to identify and describe the difficulties of learning to read fiction and
nonfiction books experienced by students of grade VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Baturraden.
This is a qualitative descriptive study. The research subjects of this study were Bahasa
teachers and grade VIII A, B, C, D. This study was conducted in the even semester of
2019 school year at SMP Negeri 1 Baturraden. The data used in this study were
divided into two, namely primary data and secondary data. Primary data were
collected from observations and interviews of teachers and students of grade VIII A,
B, C, D, while the secondary data were from the results of learning to read fiction and
nonfiction books for grade VIII A, B, C, D students at SMP Negeri 1 Baturraden. Data
collection techniques in this study used triangulation techniques (combined), in the
form of observations, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique
used Miles and Huberman technique. The results of this study indicate that students'
learning difficulties are caused by various factors. Internal factors that cause students'
learning difficulties are: 1) illness, 2) lack of motivation to learn, 3) lack of need for
material, 4) lack of attention when learning, 5) and fatigue. While external factors that
cause learning difficulties are: 1) lack of parents' attentionon education, 2) lack of
parent's attention to children, 3) parents' lack discipline in managing children's
learning time, 4) zoning system, 5) application of full day school, 6 ) less learning
time, and 7) teachers without any various method of teaching.
