Abstract

Kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) containing Ethyl p-metoxycinnamate
(EPMS) which has function as a sunscreen by absorbing solar energy. Tea
(Camellia sinensis L.) contain polyphenolic compounds that have the ability to
inhibit oxidation (antioxidants) and the capture of free radicals (radical). The aim
of this research were to compare the effect of the combination of extracts of
kencur rhizome (Kaempferia galanga L.) and tea leaves (Camellia sinensis L.) on
the sunscreen and antioxidant activity before and after the cream is formulated
use Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method.
This research used Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) model with 2 component
there were kencur extract (A) and tea extract (B), so there were 3 device of
formula those are FI (100% A), F2 (100% B), F3 (50% A dan 50% B). The
physical parameters of the cream were viscosity (poise), the scatterplot (cm2), and
pH. Based on SLD methods we can get similarity for each parameter and Rtotal, so
the optimum formula could obtain. Cream with kencur extract composition range
50-100% and tea extract 0-50% representing cream formula optimally.
Based on the results of sunscreen and antioxidant activity found that the
use of a combination of purifiedkencurextract(Kaempferia galanga L.) andtea
extract (Camellia sinensis L.) in the cream increased SPF value. While the
antioxidant activity a combination of purified kencurextract (Kaempferia galanga
L.) and tea extract (Camellia sinensis L.) viewed from the IC50 parameter in the
cream becomes smaller than the antioxidant of extract tea that have not been
formulated and compared with BHT and vitamin E.
