Abstract
This research was conducted to reveal magical realism narrative and to find out the socio-cultural context behind the emergence of magical realism narratives in a novel entitled Aroma Karsa by Dee Lestari. Faris' magical realism narrative theory in his book entitled Ordinary Enchantments Magical Realism and Remystifiction of Narratives (2004) was used in this research. This research belonged to descriptive qualitative in which words, phrases, and sentences in a novel entitled Aroma Karsa by Dee Lestari was used as the source of data. Reading and note-taking techniques was used to collect the data. An interactive model that reduced data, displayed data, and cloncluded was used to analyzed data. The result of this research was The magical realism narrated in Dee Lestari's novel was not only full of the characteristics of Faris magical realism which showed the existence of traditional culture in the modern era, but also strengthened the beliefs of the Javanese people and deconstructed it. The socio-cultural context behind the emergence of the novel Dee Lestari was caused by Javanese culture which until now still exists in the modern era. The analysis result raised two social issues and meaning. The social issues that arised were regarding the Javanese belief in their culture which more or less had a magical image and social issues regarding the teachings of Javanese culture in responding to the universe. The meanings obtained include: (1) Javanese people will always believed in cultural history related to something sacred, holy or belief in magic; (2) the existence of beliefs about sacred places and supernatural beings; (3) Javanese people believed that supernatural things and supernatural powers were alternative to realizing their ideals.
