This research aims to compare the linguistic landscape in Sofia, Bulgaria and
Purwokerto, Indonesia. The focus of the research is comparing the position of
English to other languages on top-down sign, bottom-up signs, monolingual signs
and bilingual signs. The linguistic landscape concept proposed by Gorter and
Canoz is applied in this research. This research uses mix method, where
quantitave method is used to give numerical information dealing with the
collected data while qualitative method used to eleborate the data analysis.
Based on the analysis of the research, the comparison shows that landscape in
both cities are mostly use the official language as the first language on the signs,
particularly in top-down signs, and English becomes the second language. On the
other hand, the use English on bottom-up signs relates to commercial purposes.
In addition, English also has positive and negative sides. English has a positive side to the
landscape in Sofia because English has a role in the modernization process of the city. So
does it in Purwokerto. However, the presence of English on signs threathens the
presence of Javanese as the local language on signs.
