Abstract
The objectives of this descriptive survey research were to know what types of reward systems used by the English teachersin SMP NEGERI 02 and SMP NEGERI 04 BOBOTSARI and find outthe effects of rewardtostudents. The data were obtained from interview, observations and questionnaire. The objects of this research were three English teachers at SMP Negeri 02 Bobotsari and two English teachers at SMP Negeri 04 Bobotsari. Moreover, the researcher also used students as respondents of each teacher. There were fifty students. The result of this research showed that all English teachers in the schools used thematic reward system in giving reward to students. The teachers gave some types of reward such as verbal reward, symbolic reward, token reward, activity reward, assigning peer tutor in group discussion and displaying the result of the students’ work on classroom wall magazine and school wall magazine. There were some criterions for students to be given reward: being prepared for the next lesson, helping their peers with their work, doing all their homework, having all their homework done, answering question well, producing good result test, completing the English note book neatly and being active during teaching and learning process. The teachers also often and fair in giving reward to individual and group.Meanwhile the effects of reward on the student’s like students become happier, proud, active, confident and independent. It can be seen from the result of observations and the response of questionnaire toward the reward. Thus, reward had some positive effects for the students.
