This study is aimed to describe the languages used in Malioboro Street and to
elaborate how the signs there represent locality and globality. It employed mixed
method of qualitative and quantitative. The data are all the signs displayed along
the street. They were recorded and classified according to the objectives. Based
on the analysis, it is found out that the total pictures of the sign are 226. The
most dominant sign is the bottom-up sign (75,66%). The majority of signs use
Indonesian (50,88%) and the use of Indonesian-English (25,66%) come to the
second position. Surprisingly, Javanese as the mother tongue for the majority of
the society of Yogyakarta is scarcely found. There are also other foreign
languages including Dutch, Indian, Arabian, Latin and Chinese. In terms of locality
and globality, the signs in the area does reflect them in some ways. The locality is
seen in street names, the language and the picture which used in public
information, billboards and the picture of the sign of the store. While, globality
can be found in logo, tag line, or slogan which used in the sign of the store, and
public information.
