Abstract

Charcoal is frequently used to roast some food. However, because of its varied
size, the broken charcoal cannot be used as the roasting media. It is simply
because it needs a wider surface to roast something. The waste of the charcoal
can actually be utilized to create active carbon using 0.5 N Chloride Acid
activator. Charcoal was firstly sifted using a 100 mesh screen. Then, it was
soaked for 48 hours using the activator solution. The mixture was
then separated and neutralized using distillation water. Next, it was dried at
100oC temperature. Finally, it was heated at 900o C furnace temperature. The
activated charcoal was empirically able to reduce the level of
ammonia in wastewater. The charcoal was mixed with water containing ammonia
and then stirred for 30 minutes with the ratio of 25 mg, 50 mg, 75mg, and 100 mg
charcoal with 50 mL wastewater. The mixture was then separated using filter
paper and the water was taken to analyze the content of ammonia using UV
Spectrophotometry. The result was analyzed using Isothermal Langmuir, BET,
Freundlich, and Temkin equations. Ultimately, the active carbon was tested to
know its ability to absorb Iodine and was compared with the quality of active
carbon of SNI 06-3730-1995.
