Abstract
Bioplastic is an alternative material to replace the conventional plastic
packaging. Conventional plastic isn’t degraded by nature, so it is needed the
environmentally friendly plastic such as starch based bioplastic. Utilization of
starch ganyong tubers as the main ingredient of the production of bioplastic is
very potential because it contains starch about 93,30%. But starch based has
bioplastic disadvantag namely low mechanical strength. So, a small amount of
filler need to be added to the bioplastic polymer matrix. The purpose of this
research is to know the characteristics of bioplastic from ganyong tuber starch,
the effect of filler on mechanical properties and biodegradibility. Bioplastic was
made using the principle of gelatinization. The solution was mixed and dried at
50°C for 3 days. The main ingredients of bioplastic are ganyong tubers starch and
glycerol as plasticizer. Various composition of filler of straw nano fiber or ZnO
(0,1,3,6,9,12,15,18%) were applied, followed by optimization of combination of
filler Straw Nano fiber:ZnO (20:80;40:60;60:40;80:20). The result show the
optimum tensile strength was reached 6,11 N/mm2 on the percentage of 12%
ZnO. Meanwhile the highest elongation was reached 51,91% an the percentage of
1% straw nano fiber. Furthermore the combination of straw nano fiber and ZnO
was obtained at 80:20. The rate of biodegradibility of bioplastic with the addition
of straw nano fiber is higher than pure bioplastic.
