The research entitled Students‟ Ability in Making WH-Questions aims to know how good the students‟ competence in making WH-Questions was and what kinds of mistakes made by the students in making WH-Questions. The data of this research was conducted on the 19th up to 22nd of February 2019. This researcher used descriptive study method. The subject of this research was the Second Grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Purwokerto in the Academic Year of 2018/2019. The total number of the participants was 217 students. Then, the researcher took the 15% or 57 students as the samples in this research. The researcher used test in collecting the data specifically essay test. There are two kinds of essay test used by the researcher namely restricted and extended essay test. The average score of the students was 55. Therefore, the students‟ ability in making WH-Questions in this research belongs to category fair. The students‟ success in doing those two kinds of test was different. According to the data, the students‟ ability in making restricted WH-Questions was higher than extended WH-Questions. The researcher found many mistakes made by the students in making the questions. Those mistakes were categorized into Auxiliary Verb (AV), Tenses (TS), Question Word (QW), Word Order (WO), Word Addition (WA) and Word Missing (WM). In this research, Auxiliary Verb and Tenses became the dominant mistakes made by the students since the percentage of those mistakes were always the highest in both of restricted and extended essay tests.
