Abstract

Specifically, the study was aimed at revealing students’ perspectives
towards ESP-based reading materials. The method used was descriptivequalitative
which focused on collecting information. The sample of the research
was 96 students of tenth grade in different major in SMK N 1 Bawang,
Banjarnegara. The technique for collecting data was closed-questionnaire as the
main data and semi-structured interview as the supporting data to gain depth
information from the questionnaire. The results of the questionnaire as the main
data were converted into percentages. It revealed that there were 5 indicators
which were derived into 15 points that answered the VHS students’ perspectives
towards ESP-based reading materials. Those were the five indicators along with
the findings about students’ perspectives towards ESP based reading materials.
The result of each indicator was described as follow: 1) the first indicator revealed
that more than half number of students (55%) stated that the information of the
reading materials was relevant to their major and the materials were not only
theoretical but also practical, 2) in the second indicator, the number of students
who admitted that the reading materials provided new specialized vocabulary
related to the their major were 63%, 3) the third indicator showed that 86%
students clarified that reading materials were consider a real language, the
students have to learn in real life not only the language learned in the classroom,
4) the fourth indicator stated that all students (100%) acknowledged that reading
materials had varying texts but more than half number of students (57%) were not
interested in reading it, 5) all students (100%) in the fifth indicator revealed that
reading materials were relevant to their major and were able to motivate them to
read a lot to fulfill their need in gaining the depth knowledge of their vocational
field.
