Abstract

Cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) is a kind of famous vegetable plant developed broadly
especially in mountains or plateau. However, there are some obstacles in planting the cabbage, one
of them is the attack of cabbage head caterpillar (Crocidolomia binotalis Ze/1). Recently, most
farmers controls it by using synthetic pesticide due to its effectiveness, practical, and cheap price.
However, the use of synthetic pesticide in long period can affect many negative effects like pest
resistance, and it causes the death of natural enemies, causes the human health, as well as the
environment contamination. Therefore, it needs another alternatives of for those pest controls
namely by using the natural material which is more environmentally friendly. One of the plants
which can be the natural pesticide is big sage plant (Lantana camara L). This research aims to find
out the effect big sage leaves toward the cabbage head caterpillar mortality and effective
concentrate level to control cabbage head caterpillar but it is safe for cabbage plants. This research
was conducted in Zoology laboratory of Biology Study Program and Pharmacy Biology
Laboratory of Pharmacy Study Program of University of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto for 4
months. The design of the research was complete random design with the treatment of concentrate
variation of big sage extract. The extract concentration tested was 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%. As
the comparison, it used Prevathon insecticide as the positive control without extract treatment (0%
concentration) as the negative control and repeated for 4 times. The treatment was done by feeding
the cabbage head caterpillar using fresh cabbage dipped with the big sage extract for ±15 minutes
as the treatment. The experiment animal was cared in a plastic jar consisting of 1 0 caterpillars the
3rd instar. The observed parameter was the mortality of the caterpillar during the experiment,
starting from 1,3,6,12,224,48, and 72 hours after the treatment. The analysis data was byTANOVA
test (Analysis of Variance) with the trust level of95%. If the treatment showed the real effect, it
continued by the test of DMRT (I5uncan Multiple range Test) with the trust level of 95%. The
result of the research from the test of simplified phytochemical of big sage and test ofKLT (thin
layer chromatography) showed that big sage extract positively contents active compound of
saponin, flavonoid, and tannin. The big sage extract affected positively against the mortality of
caterpillar. The higher concentrate of big sage extract the higher mortality of the caterpillar will
be. The concentrate of big sage extract of 40% resulted the mortality of 57.50% or equal to
Prevathon insecticide (as much as 62.50%) without negative effect on the cabbage plants.
