Abstract
The increasing use of plastics in everyday life causes environmental pollution. Synthetic plastic is not degradable by nature so it need an environmentally friendly plastic which were made from starch. In this research, biodegradable plastics synthesized from tapioca waste with ZnO and nano fiber of tapioca waste as filler. Tapioca waste utilization as the main ingredient of production of bioplastics is potential because it contains starch about 68%. The purpose of this research to know the effect of filler on chemical structure, mechanical properties, and degradation in the soil. Bioplastic was made using blending method. The solution was dried at 50 ° C for 3 days. The main materials of bioplastic are starch of tapioca waste, and glycerol as plasticizer. Various composition filler of nano fiber or ZnO (0%, 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% ) were applied , followed by optimization of combination of filler nano fiber and ZnO (20:80, 40:60, 50:50, 60:40, 80:20). The results show the optimum tensile strength was reached (3,36 N /mm²
) on the percentage of 3% ZnO. Meanwhile the highest elongation (133.28%) on the percentage of 3% nano fiber. The biodegradation test in soil was degraded by 87% for eight days on the percentage of 12% nano fiber. The optimum composition was obtained at 50: 50 (nano fiber: ZnO) based on tensile strength and biodegradability. The chemical structure was analyzed using FTIR not appear the new compounds of the filler. From this research can be developed bioplastic with the addition of each filler for increase mechanical properties.
