Abstract

The perception of child value in the family can be a benchmark for a couple to have children. There are two perceptions of child value in the family: positive and negative value. This study aimed to discover the perceptions of child value on the number of children in reproductive age couples in Pekandangan Village, Banjarmangu Sub-district, Banjarnegara Regency. The research method used was survey through interview/ questionnaire technique. The population in this study was 674 reproductive age couples in Pekandangan Village. 67 couples were taken as the research samples using proportional random sampling technique. The research data were processed using frequency tables, percentages, and scoring, and then they were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that positive child value indicators like emotional, economic, and calmness benefits; empowerment and improvement of oneself; child recognition; and the family harmony and continuity tended to affect the number of children in reproductive age couples. Meanwhile, negative child value indicators such as economic burden and costs, limitations and alternative costs, physical needs, and the sacrifice of husband and wife's personal life did not affect the number of children.
