Abstract
The purpose of this research is to describe the translation errors found in the fan subtitle of Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie, the subtitling strategy used by the subtitler, Pein Akatsuki, in the fan subtitle and how they affect its equivalence in translation to find the quality of the fan subtitle.
Descriptive qualitative method is used for the research type. The data source for the research is the fan subtitle of Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie by Pein Akatsuki. For this research, the data consist of utterances found in the subtitling strategies, their translation errors, and their equivalence in translation to find the quality of translation in the fan subtitle are collected from the data source. Documentation is the method used in the method of collecting data. Descriptive analysis is used in the research as the technique of analysis. The Star Wars: The Force Awaken movie’s fan subtitle is the primary data source used in this research and supportive materials, such as related researches, journals, books, and dictionaries are used as the secondary data.
The researcher compiled 1,343 data that were found in the movie. The research gave these following results such as: 1,249 strategies of data for translation strategies, 32 translation errors data, and 1,229 meaning equivalence data. Those strategies found in the data source consist of: 438 data for transfer strategies, 124 data for expansion strategy, 130 for paraphrase strategy, 339 data for imitation strategy, 23 data for resignation strategy, 115 data for condensation strategy, 30 data for deletion strategy, 24 data for transcription strategy and 26 data for decimation. Also, there were 32 translation errors in the subtitle, which are 13 binary errors and 19 non-binary errors. Lastly, there were 866 data on grammatical equivalence in translation, 212 data on textual equivalence in translation, and 151 data on pragmatic equivalence. Hence, following the result of the research, transfer is the most dominant among others, non-binary errors were the most amount of errors to be found, and grammatical equivalence was the leading on meaning equivalence in the fan subtitle.
