Abstract

This research was aimed at knowing (1) student’ writing level in second grade of SMP Muhammadyah 3 Purwokerto (2) the types of students’ writing error included the percentage of each type of error. The method used in this research was descriptive study. In analyzing the error, the steps were collecting data, identifying or classifying error, ranking the error, and explaining error. The population of this research was all of students in second grade which consisted of 112 students. 30 % of the population or 34 students were taken as the sample. The sample was chosen randomly. The data was taken through an essay test. The students were asked to write a daily activities. The result of analyzing the data could be concluded in the following. Firstly,the students’ writing ability in SMP Muhammadyah 3 Purwokerto at grade VIII belonged to enough category, as the mean score of the students was (60.44). Secondly, The type of error was divided into grammatical error and lexical error. Error in gramatical reached 157 deviation whereas, error in lexical reached 63 deviation.
