Abstract

Abstract: The study was carried out to know the type of fillers used by the
students, the most used fillers,and the possible function that cause the students to
use fillers in speaking class of the fourth semester students in Universitas
Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. Descriptive quantitative was used as a method of
this research. The subject of this study was fourth semester students of English
Department in Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. The writer took a class
consist of 24 student as subject and 10 member of them as respondents.The data
were collected through observation,survey,and interview.The result of the
research showed that there are three types of fillers that appeared in the speaking
class,those are quasi lexical fillers,lexical fillers, and idiosyncratic fillers. Most
frequent fillers used by the student was quasi lexical fillers,such as
uhmm,hmm,and aaah. It was also found that most student use fillers as time
obtainer in a conversation or in a presentation, not only used as time obtainer
fillers also used to show their understanding about certain topic in the beginning
of their respond.
