Abstract

Caffeine is an alkaloid compound that is widely present in coffee beans and has
clinical benefits such as relieving fatigue, hunger and drowsiness. Excessive
consumption of caffeine can cause stomach upset, diminished memory and
wakeful. So research needs to be done on the determination of caffeine content in
coffee powder varieties. Coffee samples used are coffee Canephora and
Andungsari typical of Lampung Barat. A simple and rapid method of FTIR
spectroscopy to determine the caffeine content of 1651 cm-1 wave numbers.
Attenuatedtotal Reflectance Accessory (ATR) as a sample processing technique
for caffeine determination and quantification in coffee samples. The result of
linearity test at concentration range 9000-15000 ppm gives r = 0.978 with line
equation y = 0.0000339x + 0.0162 with detection limit 1232.52 ppm and limit of
quantitation 4108.40 ppm and percent recovery 88.67% . Based on the result of
determination of caffeine content in coffee of Andungsari equal to 0.638% and
coffee of Canephora 0.931% have fulfilled requirement as mentioned in SNI 01-
3542-2004. T test results show that there is a difference in caffeine levels between
coffee Andungsari and coffee Canephora.
