This research explores the alcoholic woman talks by Grice’s theory of cooperative principle. The aim of this research is to identify and classify the kind of observance and non-observance maxims that conducted by the alcoholic woman in her utterance and the reaction of the alcoholic woman’s interlocutor. Meanwhile, descriptive qualitative method is employing this research.
The data were taken from the alcoholic woman utterances. Based on the data obtained, there are 25 data that contained observance and non-observance maxims of cooperative principle. There are 8 data happens when the alcoholic woman in alcoholism. So, 17 data happens when the alcoholic woman in normal situation. The results show that for the observance maxim, the maxim of relation is the most often. Then for the non-observance maxim, flouting the maxim of quantity and violating the maxim of manner are frequently used by the alcoholic woman. These results suggest that the interlocutor’s reaction of the alcoholic woman talks is different from each other. It is based on their relationship with the alcoholic woman.
