Abstract

Synthetic industrial dyestuff waste which remains in the waste water will eventually enter the surrounding environment and cause water scarcity. The most widely used method in water treatment is filtration using membrane technology. Membrane technology has several advantages, including: separation processes which may occur at room temperature and its use is not destructive. Membranes are a selective barrier between two phases (Fauzan, 2009). This study aimed to determine the effect of TiO2 concentration to the characteristics of zeolite-clay ceramic membrane, the effect of PVA polymer concentration on hybrid membrane characteristics, the flux and rejection of hybrid ceramic membrane in water purification process. The results discovered that the addition of TiO2 could affect membrane characteristics, the more % of TiO2 the higher the density, porosity and water absorption were. The addition of polyvinyl alcohol could affect the hybrid membrane characteristics, the more % of PVA the higher the density was and the lower porosity and water absorption were. Dye removal with good hybrid membrane was at 7% PVA concentration with flux value reached 0.227273% and its score of rejection was 92.01521%.
