This study aimed to determine condition of democratic education in a cultural
perspective of Banyumas community. This research used descriptive method with
a qualitative approach with the research subject of Banyumas community
consisting of Banyumas cultural observers, Banyumas historians, members of
Banyumas political parties, member of Banyumas regional KPU (General
Election Commissions). Data collection techniques used in this study were
observation, interview, documentation and literature studies. The results of study
showed that: 1) Banyumas culture consisted of social behavior, use of
communication languages, artistic tastes that may appear seeds of value which
was inherent in democratic education, 2) The practice of democratic education in
Banyumas society was not only carried out in political events such General
Election, routine or often referred to Selapanan, but also practice of democratic
education in social aspect implemented with the aim of social activities within the
community, 3) Although knowledge and understanding of democracy of the
community was still quite simple, but they had demonstrated a democratic lifestyle
that originated from existing traditions and cultures, 4) Democracy education in
the community originating from culture should be strengthened by formal
educational institutions, political parties and government institution, so that
democratic education can be understood comprehensively.
