Abstract
This action research aimed to improve the students‟ speaking skill of grade VII B at Junior High School 3 Purwokerto through pair practice technique by using cue cards in 2017/2018 academic year. This research was conducted in two cycles. The first and second cycle consisted of two meetings. The techniques used to collect data were an observation, questionnaire, interview, and speaking assessment. Based on the research conducted, pair practice technique by using cue cards successfully improved the students‟ speaking skill. The cue cards supported the students‟ speaking skill improvement as it enabled the students to stimulate each other to speak English. Another improvement of the students‟ speaking skill could also be seen from the students‟ ability to generate their ideas to speak English. The results of the students‟ speaking test proved that the students‟ speaking skill improved. The mean of the students‟ speaking test improved from 40.43 in pre-test to 59.41 in post test 1 and 73.19 in post test 2 with the improvement of the students‟ speaking test in post test 1, 46.94% and in post test 2, 81.03%. This research had already met the success of indicator. In Post test 1, the number of students who achieved the KKM was 12 students (36.36%) and 29 students (87.87%) in post test 2. The students‟ participation also increased, in cycle 1, 31.91% and in cycle 2, 57.69%. The students‟ responds taken from questionnaire was positive. It was because from 33 students 77.58% felt joy and easier in joining speaking class through pair practice technique. The Interview result also showed that all students interviewed felt enthusiastic in joining speaking class through pair practice technique by using cue cards.
