This study aimed to describe the readiness of learning and mathematical
comprehension skill of the 8th graders in SMP Negeri 2 Bojongsari on the
material of relations and functions. The type of this research was descriptive
qualitative. The data analysis involved data reduction, data presentation and
conclusion. Sample collection was conducted through purposive sampling
technique. In this study, students are grouped into three groups into high
achievers, moderate and low students based on the score taken from odd midsemester
test in academic year of 2016/2017. Data collection methods used in
this study involved tests, questionnaires, interviews and documentation.
Triangulation technique was used to test the data validity. The results showed:
The equality of high achiever students, medium and low was that they did not
have difficulty in translating question into symbols or diagrams. The differences
of the high achievers students, moderate and low were that their ability to answer
the question with interpreting and extrapolating indicator while moderate and low
achiever students were quite capable in interpreting and extrapolating. The
differences in learning readiness of high with moderate and low achiever were
that high achievers had good attention, while moderate and low achiever have
enough of attention.
