This study aimed to describe the ability of understanding mathematical
concept and learning interest of students in SMP Alam Al-Aqwiya Cilongok.
The method was descriptive qualitative. The data were collected through
testing, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The subject was
students of Class VIIA. The students were grouped into three; students with
high, medium, and low level of learning achievement. The questionnaire result
of students with high level of learning achievement showed that students had
medium learning interest. The students were able to restate a concept that
has been learnt precisely, to classify object based on particular characteristic
in line with the concept, to serve concept in any forms of mathematical
representatives, and to apply concept or algorithm in problem solving.
Students with medium level of learning achievement had a high learning
interest. The students were fairly able to restate to restate a concept that has
been learnt precisely, were fairly able to classify object based on particular
characteristic in line with the concept, were fairly able to serve concept in any
forms of mathematical representatives, and were fairly able to apply concept
or algorithm in problem solving. Students with low level of learning
achievement were not able to understand the concept of any indicators. The
students had low learning interest especially in Mathematics lesson. It can be
concluded that students who have high level of ability of understanding
mathematical concept may or may not indicate high learning interest.
