Abstract
This research aims to describe two kind of implicatures – the conventional and conversational implicature – with the politeness principles. This research applies descriptive qualitative approach. Moreover, the researcher uses observation method to collect data. The source of the data is “Berabe” pojok discourse issued by Kedaulatan Rakyat daily newspaper in September 2017. The research is conducted in three steps: (1) data collection, which used observation method with tapping and writing technique; (2) data analysis, which uses orthographic and pragmatic comparasons; (3) data findings presentation, which uses informal method qualitatively. The results identify that there are 11 sentences carrying conventional implicature and 61 sentences carrying conversational implicature. The results of the implied meaning derived from the conventional implicature identified in “Berabe” pojok discourse are as follows: 6 satirizing, 2 informing, 1 proposing, and 1 accepting. The implied meaning derived from the conversational implicature identified in the discourse are as follows: 21 satirizing, 9 informing, 8 accepting, 8 criticizing, 5 warning, 3 proposing, 3 expecting, 2 influencing, 1 requesting, and 1 enforcing. The conventional implicature which violates or adheres to Leech‟s politeness principles can be described as follows: (a) tact (3 utterances violate the maxim); (b) approbation (1 utterance violates the maxim); (c) generosity (2 utterances violate the maxim); (d) modesty (no maxim); (e) aggrement (2 utterances adhere to the maxim); and (f)sympathy (2 utterances adheres to the maxim and 1 utterance violate the maxim). The conversational implicature which violates or adheres to Leech‟s politeness principles can be described as follows: (a) tact (2 utterances adhere to the maxim and 5 utterances violate the maxim); (b) approbation (1 utterance adheres to the maxim); (c) generosity (7 utterances adheres to the maxim and 5 utterances violate the maxim); (d) modesty (1 utterance adheres to the maxim and 1 utterance violate the maxim); (e) agreement (20 utterances adheres to the maxim and 9 utterances violate the maxim); and (f) sympathy (4 utterances adheres to the maxim and 6 utterances violate the maxim).
