Abstract

The aim of this thesis was to find out whether Modified Direct Method was effective in teaching Future Tense or not. The population of this study was the second year students of SMK Kesatrian Purwokerto in the academic year of 2010/2011. The total population was more than 100 students. The writer took XI Technique of Otomotif 2 class as the experimental class consisting 40 students and XI Technique of Otomotif 1 class as the control class consisting 40 students. The method used was experimental research and the design used was quasi experiment. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. The instrument used in this study was test; pre-test and post-test. After the data have been analyzed, it showed the future tense mean score of pre-test in experimental class is 64.50, while in control class is 65.29. Thus, the mean score of post-test in experimental class is 82.21, while in control class is 74.57. The deviation score in experimental class is 17.71 while in control class is 9.29. So, the deviation in experimental group is higher than control group. The t-test result is 3.407 and t-table in d.f: 78 at the level of significance 0.05 is 1.6646. Thus t-test is higher than t-table (3.407>1.6646). So, the research is effective.
