This research was aimed at knowing the students’ competence in writing descriptive
text. This research used descriptive method with 52 students at eight grade of SMP
PGRI Sumbang in academic year 2016/2017 as the total populations. There were 52
students who were chosen as the sample. Written test was given to the samples in the
form of creating descriptive paragraph about family or class mate. The students’
writing was analyzed based on the aspects of writing, such as content, organization,
vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. The result of this research showed that there
were 4 students or ( 8%) who achieved score in fair category, 41 students or (79%) in
good category, and 7 students or ( 13%) in very good category. The students’ writing
competence belonged to good category, with the mean score of . The students had a
problem in mechanics aspect.
