Abstract

Speaking skills is essential to language skills mastered by students from elementary schools. The observation results showed ± 50% students of class V in the North Cilacap Subdistrict have a low value on aspects of speaking. Students appear shy and afraid to speak in front of his friends. Based from those things the problems raised in this research are: 1) Is the method of paired storytelling effectively to improve speaking skills in fifth grade elementary school students in the North Cilacap Subdistrict?, 2) Is there a difference the speaking skills between students group who were learning by using paired storytelling with group of students who were not using a method of paired storytelling learning? The research was designed with the quasi experiment used. Samples taken from fifth grade of 6 elementary school in North Cilacap Subdistrict captured by total sampling. Research instruments using speaking skills test. Data analysis techniques using different test (t-test).
The results of research showed that the application of paired storytelling effective to improve speaking skills in fifth grade elementary school students in the North Cilacap Subdistrict. A number of 55 people or 91.7% of the experimental group students reached a value of 20 or more from the post-test. There is a difference the speaking skills between students group who were learning by using paired storytelling with group of students who were not using a method of paired storytelling learning. This is evidenced by the different test results (t-test) greater than the value of t-table at the level of significant 95% (t test = 6.128> t table = 1.6659). Based on these results, so all of hypothesis proposed was accepted / proven.
