The aims of this research were: (1) to know the students’ competence in
composing questions at the second grade of MTs Negeri Karanganyar Purbalingga
academic year 2009/2010, and (2) to know types of errors made by students in
composing questions.
This research was conducted at MTs Negeri Karanganyar Purbalingga.
The method used in this research was descriptive. The writer chose the second
grade of MTs Negeri Karanganyar Purbalingga as population. There were five
classes of the second grade of MTs Negeri Karanganyar Purbalingga. Each class
was composed of 37 students for class A, 36 students for class B, 38 for class C,
35 for class D, and 39 students for class E. The total of population was 185. The
writer took 20% from population as a sample. In other words, the sample was 37
students. The data of the research were collected on March, 8th – 13th 2010. In
collecting the data, the writer used objective test.
After the writer analyzed the data, it was found that the competence of the
second grade of MTs Negeri Karanganyar Purbalingga in the academic year
2009/2010 in composing question belonged to fair category. It was found that the
mean score was 13.26 (53.04%). And the most of errors made by the students in
composing question belonged to Misordering(51.31%). This error is characterized
by the incorrect placement of a morpheme/group of morpheme or a word in
sentence or an utterance
