The aim of this research was: to find out how good the students knowledge
in English vocabulary.
This research was descriptive study. The research was conducted to the first
year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto in Academic Year
2011/2012. The writer used random sampling technique to get the sample. The
sample was 47 students from 190 students. The technique of data collection was
using vocabulary test which consisted of 50 items. The writer divided the items
into three categories. The first was multiple choices, and there were 40 items and
each items consisted of 4 options. The second was gap filling, and this category
consisted of 5 items. The last was guessing, which consisted of 5 items.
The result was each students has good knowledge in English vocabulary.
There were 18 students belonged to category very good. 13 students belonged to
category good, and 8 students belonged to category fair. In spite of the result
above, there were 7 students who belonged to category bad, and there was only
one student belonged to category very bad.
