The aims of this research were; (1) to find out the students competence in
using Degree of comparison of adjective at the eighth grade students of SMP
Negeri 2 Jatilawang, (2) to find out the errors made by students in using Degree of
comparison of Adjective. The method used in this research was descriptive. The
writer chose the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Jatilawang as the
population. The total of population was 210. The writer took 17% from population
as a sample. In other words the sample was 36 students. This research used
random sampling. The result showed that the students’ ability in using Degree of
Comparison of adjective belonged to good category. Good category can be seen
from the mean that was 18.41 and the classical ability that was 66.94 %. The most
difficult based on the students’ test was “comparative degree”. It showed by the
total incorect answer of this that was 268 or 29.7 %, it means that the students
find difficult to answer the questions about Degree of comparison of adjective
"comparative". The easiest was “positive degree”. It was showed by the total
correct answer of this Degree o comparison of adjective that was 632 or 70.2%, it
means that the students answered the questions about degree of comparison of
adjective "positive" easily. The error made by students in used degree of
comparison of adjective was overgeneralization; it means that the students often
generalize the use of the degree of comparison of adjective for the same usage.
